One of the most asked business questions of people who are just getting into Internet Marketing is “When can I quit my full-time job? I hate it!” Here is a short two-minute video with Paul Lemberg during his visit earlier this week to Charlotte. The funky music was playing at the restaurant, tune it out and listen to Paul – great advice.

By practicing “awesomness” in every part of your life – but especially your full-time job that you dread, will give you a new sense of purpose – a better mindset. By over-delivering at your current job, it will carry forward when you work for yourself and you will continue to over-delivery, which is a killer Point of Difference in any market.
Paul is dead on that when the time comes for you to resign and leave, you want them to weep because you will be so hard to replace. You want to make that kind of impact. Let’s face it, if you start to get lazy in your current job, you will take those same lazy habits with you when you try to do SEO on your own – which will force you back into the work force again. Don’t make that mistake by practicing awesomeness now.
You will also feel better by accepting a day’s pay for a day’s work – not a couple of hours of work and the rest of the time updating your FaceBook status. That’s just another form of stealing. Over-deliver with your employer and ask for better hours. Paul suggests a 4×10 schedule instead of a 5×8 schedule. It is the same number of hours, but it has been proven that employees are far more productive and less stressed in a 4×10 schedule.
This gives you a full day off where you can concentrate on your Internet business, instead of trying to squeeze it in a couple of hours a night and running yourself into the ground physically, due to lack of sleep, and mentally, due to “always being on.”
And finally, make sure you have “clear separation” between your day job and your Internet business.

I agree 100% about the separation between the jobs – That’s very important!

It was really hard for me to quit my full time job and just work off my internet business. When I finally got the balls to quit, it was terrifying and amazing… and then come to find out after about two weeks, I was so freakin bored out of my mind it was miserable. It was definitely a life changing experience. I have gotten a little more accustomed to the lifestyle, but still struggle with boredom some days!
