I am often asked how do you value a domain? How much is it worth? This is both on the selling side and the buying side.
There is so much that goes into this “formula” due to what exactly are you buying … are you buying just the domain? The design? The traffic? The customer list? Those are all key factors in determining the actual worth of the domain and they can get pretty complex.
However, there are two sites I use in order to get a good “measure” of the domain.
Buying a Domain?: Use DNScoop.com. They tend to “under value” domains and use a formula based on traffic, PageRank and links to determine value. For example, they value my SEORevolution site as worth just under $6,000. Not much.
Selling a Domain?: Use BizInformation.org. They tend to “over value” domains and use a system similar to DNScoop. How much do they value my SEORevolution site? $1.5 million.
As you can see, there is a big difference between the two and whether you are buying or selling, you can use each service to leverage your negotiation.

I checked the differences of price for my main website.
$17,280 for DNScoop.com
$398,721.80 for BizInformation.org
I make between $20-40k a year from the site — using the standard 10 year of revenue rule it could be worth the later – but only if I can keep that income going
Mind you, I’ve also seen estimates of $2 million for the site as it is really underutilized.
(And yes, I intentionally left out a link to my web page :) )

Thanks for those two links, I have never used them before or even heard of them. Of course a domain is only worth what someone will pay for it and you never know what will sell and what won’t.
I also use http://websiteoutlook.com to check value and also think they overvalue domains.
One of my niche auto blogs I check on the two above and on websiteoutlook and got pretty different results.
Domain http://www.basicsofseo.com
http://www.dnscoop.com lists the value at $1,265
http://www.bizinformation.org lists the value at an amazing $96,134.60
http://www.websiteoutlook.com lists the value at $5022.4 USD
Personally I think they are all way over value but I do like the center one and if someone offered me that much I would be thrilled…..heck I would be thrilled with a few hundred :)

Good idea about leaving your domain out …

EstiBot.com is a pretty good tool that is often in the middle. They estimate the “bare” domain SEORevolution.com at $120 – but when they add in the traffic they estimate it at $140,000 – big difference.

You can also try http://www.estimix.com – a free tool that provides a nice summary of the website performance. The estimation provided by estimix is the result of a complex analysis based on factors like: the age of the website, the demographic structure of the traffic, the countries where the website is popular and sources of the traffic.
