Despite much talk in the search engine forums all week, the Google Dance did not start yesterday. I am still predicting a start on Monday. I will watch it closely over the weekend and when I can verify that it has actually started, I will notify you by email. I will then do my prediction of new incoming link numbers and PageRank. As the datacenter was “in flux” for February, I am looking for a solid update. If your site went down a point last month, look for a rebound this update.
With the recent announcement of Yahoo! acquiring Inktomi, it was wondered what MSN would do. MSN and Yahoo! are strong rivals and MSN will not allow for a Yahoo! based company to serve their secondary search results which Inktomi does presently. Just after the announcement of the Inktomi/Yahoo! deal, another buyout occurred, but it received far less press. LookSmart bought a little-known search engine called WiseNut.
As you are aware, LookSmart is the primary feed for search results in MSN. It seems clear that the buyout was in direct reaction to the Inktomi deal. Look for WiseNut to replace Inktomi as the secondary search feed within the next 90 days. I personally spoke to a LookSmart employee who would not confirm nor deny this rumor, but he did state to me, “Your logic is very sound.”
WiseNut does not allow for submissions to their search engine, rather they crawl the web through links.
