The new search engine market share numbers were just released. Here is the current breakdown:
Google: 28.4%
Yahoo!: 27.6%
MSN: 18.4%
AOL: 9.1%
Ask Jeeves: 3.1%
Overture: 2.7%
InfoSpace: 2.4%
Netscape: 2.2%
AltaVista: 2.1%
Lycos: 1.1%
Earthlink: 1.0%
LookSmart: 0.8%
Total share of the above: 98.9% (Source: StatMarket)
According to these new figures, Google has a 68.3% market reach, down from 78% three months ago. MSN has gained significant ground, and the smaller engines have gained collective market share to force Google downward. While Google still has a stranglehold on the market, this 10% drop is a sign that the world is not completely taken by the Silicon Valley Champ. It will be interesting to see what the figures look like next quarter.
Yahoo! is now consistently displaying the top four results from Overture at the top of their search listings. Review your bids in Overture to ensure you have a top four listing. Often, you can slide to the #4 position with a better Title and Description than your competitors and outproduce them while paying up to 70% less per click.
Note: The best conversion ratios are delivered by including your price in the Title (just make sure it is lower than your competition’s in Overture).
