Once again, Google’s ‘continuous update’ is just part of their imagination as the monthly PageRank update occurred yesterday. I have spent all night pouring over log files and analyzing the results. In past updates, there have been changes, and movement, however, I have not seen changes such as what I am seeing now in a long time. The results are also confusing. For example, for the term ‘web marketing’ our site moved from #8 to #6, yet our page views are off my more than 500 for the 24 hour period tested.
Usually, when page views / unique visitors drop, the issue is Page Saturation (the number of pages listed in the index), but in this case, across the board, page saturation increased, the position in the SERPs for the main keyword phrase rose, but overall page views and unique visitors went down. I am hoping this is only an abnormality with the update just going live.
Let’s hope this is just a flux and things will settle come Monday morning.
