“Niche Marketing” is an old buzzword that you need to purge from your vocabulary. Everyone is searching for that one market that is red hot that no one is doing and the money just pours in. I have news for you, it does NOT exist. You will be searching endlessly and the only thing that will increase is your frustration level.
If you read the books we recommended on the business page, you probably have found your passion in business. Your niche should be something you can write about for days on end without repeating yourself, and most importantly be profitable in the process.
The profitability is usually dependent on fears, irrational desires, and immediate relief from a problem. That is why niches like these are so profitable:
Dating: Fear of being alone, “irrational” desire to be married.
Weight loss: Fear of being called fat and health problems. Pills provide immediate relief.
Viagra: Fear of not being ready. Pills provide immediate relief.
Gambling: Irrational desire to win big money.
Payday Loans: Fear of late payments and bankruptcy, immediate relief.
You don’t have to be in these spaces to make serious money. It might be an industrial solution (immediate relief) or a flower business (immediate relief to the man who forgot his anniversary). The key is finding a thirsty crowd, giving them a drink (to initially satisfy them), and then focus on selling them a second glass.
Reach Your Goals Quickly
The bottom line is you have to be able to spend hours on it and not go crazy. Even if there isn’t a direct keyword for your niche that you are passionate about, you can still likely dig into it and find a profitable success (read about that in our keyword research section). It just takes a little creative thinking and testing to find an angle that will work.
But purge the “I must find a niche to make it” bullshit from your thinking. Even the most competitive markets have room for another entry with a different angle to satisfy the “thirsty crowd.” After all, isn’t that what marketing is all about?
